On the eve of COP30, UN Climate Chief, Simon Stiell has called on world leaders to step up efforts to tackle the worsening climate crisis, stressing that while the Paris Agreement is delivering real progress, much more needs to be done, particularly in the Amazon region.
Stiell highlighted the alarming rise in climate-related disasters, noting that the world is already witnessing devastating impacts such as Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean, Super Typhoons in Vietnam and the Philippines, and a tornado that recently ripped through Southern Brazil. He said these events underscore the urgency for nations to act faster and more decisively.
According to Stiell, COP30 must achieve three key goals: send a clear signal that countries are united in climate cooperation and ready to deliver strong outcomes on all fronts; accelerate implementation across every sector and economy; and ensure that climate action improves people’s daily lives by promoting stronger growth, more jobs, cleaner air, better health, and affordable, secure energy.
Reflecting on his experience, Stiell noted that this will be his fourth COP since assuming office, and he expressed confidence in global unity. “At every COP I’ve attended, countries have managed to overcome their differences and deliver,” he said. “So now, let’s get on with the job.”
