As climate change changes the face of agriculture in Africa, the African Union will convene a Seed Summit to address the importance of resilient seed systems in ensuring food security, supporting smallholder farmers and advancing climate adaptation across the continent.
The summit, set to hold from the 5th to 7th of October, will be held in the Kingdom of Eswatini, with a focus discussion on Africa’s seed systems, agricultural resilience and the future of food security across the continent. The summit will also serve as a platform to advance the implementation of the CAADP Kampala Declaration and Action Plan and the Africa Seed and Biotechnology Platform (ASBP).
The summit is expected to bring together policymakers, stakeholders, researchers, farmers, development partners and private sector stakeholders to discuss how to improve access to quality seeds, strengthen agricultural innovation and support climate-resilient farming practices.
Experts say that resilient seed systems are important to help farmers in Africa adapt and protect food production as climate change increasingly threatens agricultural productivity through rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and extreme weather events.
The summit is in line with the growing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, protect biodiversity and build stronger food systems capable of responding to Africa’s growing climate and development challenges.
