COP31: Comrade Kilani, PTDF, Explore Possible Collaboration for Nigeria’s Energy Transition

The Special Adviser to the President of Nigeria on Climate Change Matters, Comrade Yussuf Kilani, met with the leadership of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) on the 4th of November to explore collaboration on Nigeria’s climate and energy transition priorities ahead of COP31.

Comrade Kilani visited the Fund’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, and his management team for discussions centred on developing Nigerian expertise, strengthening institutional cooperation and expanding opportunities in the evolving global energy sector.

According to Comrade Kilani, the engagement focused on indigenous capacity development, skills and technology transfer, research and innovation. These areas are intended to position Nigerian professionals to take advantage of opportunities emerging from the global energy transition.

The discussions also explored sustained cooperation beyond COP31, with an emphasis on aligning Nigeria’s climate ambitions with its energy sector development and human capital priorities.

For sustainable development, the proposed collaboration places attention on the skills and knowledge needed to translate climate commitments into practical opportunities for Nigerians. Training, research and access to technology are central to preparing professionals to contribute to changes across the energy sector.

Comrade Kilani expressed appreciation to the PTDF management team for their reception and constructive engagement.

“I look forward to translating these discussions into meaningful partnerships and tangible outcomes for Nigeria,” he said.

Details of specific programmes, funding arrangements or implementation timelines were not provided in his account of the visit.
